When it comes to authentic Filipino martial arts the name Pat O'Malley is known right across Europe as well as in the USA and the Philippines as being Europe's leading light in both the full contact Eskrima scene and the promotion and teaching of Authentic Filipino Martial Arts.
This comes as no surprise as Master O'Malley has over 30 years experience in the martial arts with over 25 of those years dedicated to training in the Filipino martial arts, Pat has trained with many top world recognised Masters of the art and his list of instructors reads like a who?s who of the FMA.
After many years of study, Pat teamed up with another top UK Eskrimador John Harvey to devise and formulate the Rapid Arnis Systems as they both felt at the time the FMA in the UK was somewhat lacking when it came to teaching the general public the real art of the Philippines. Pretty soon Rapid Arnis became popular right across Europe and was recognised by many as being the leading group when it came to both the authentic Filipino martial art of Arnis / Eskrima and the sporting side of the art and to date has produced more British, European and World full contact Eskrima Champions than any other organisation in Europe.
Due to it's popularity and success the Rapid Arnis Systems changed it's name in 2000 to Rapid Arnis International and the sole responsibility of running the organisation finally fell solely on the shoulders of one of it's founders Pat O'Malley. Rapid Arnis International is now the sole governing body of the Rapid Arnis Systems of Arnis / Eskrima under the guidance of Master Pat O'Malley which to date has over 20 clubs around the United Kingdom, Europe and other parts of the World.
One thing that makes Master O'Malley unique is the fact that he stills travels to and from the Philippines to train with the top Masters of the art so he can continuously update his knowledge of the Filipino martial arts, he still believes that it is a life time study and you should never believe you have it all.
Master O'Malley has over the years built a reputation of being one of the leading figures for Authentic Filipino Martial Arts in Europe and to date he has been author to over 50 related articles about the authentic Filipino martial arts in many major martial arts magazines. Master O'Malley has also appeared many times in the Filipino national news papers and television as well as many local UK TV news programmes and news papers around Great Britain and Europe. More recently Master O'Malley was involved with the BBC Martial Arts Game Show Series 'Masters of Combat' where he worked as the weapons handler which also involved teaching skills to many of the competitors. He has also unselfishly advised the BBC and other TV documentary channels such has the Discovery Channel and the BBC on numerous occasions with regards to seeking out the real Masters of the art in the Philippines.
Master O'Malley has also built up a reputation as being one of the most formidable full contact stick fighters both in and out of the armour, before retiring from competition in 2002 after winning over 40 full contact titles, his record of over 300 fights with only 9 losses is a record many only dream of achieving and he puts this down to learning the real art from the people he has had the unique opportunity to train with.
Master O'Malley is also the leading member and original founder of the infamous 'Black Eagle Society' where Eskrimadors from many styles come together to test their skills in full contact no rules stick fighting wearing only head gear and light hand protection.
Over the years Master O'Malley was heavily involved in WEKAF (the World Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation) which is based in Cebu City, Philippines. As well as being one of the main British Team Coaches Master O'Malley rose to the position of World Vice President and also was recognised as an international tournament director, Master O'Malley was also responsible for advising and involving other countries in to the WEKAF tournament scene including, France, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, and Ireland. Master O'Malley was also appointed World Tournament Director at the World Championships that were held in Manila in 1994. Master O'Malley retired from the organisation in 2002 but he still coaches his own students for the WEKAF events and other tournaments including the World Arnis Alliance (World Kali Sports) Championships that was held in Manila in December 2005 and 2006.
Master O'Malley now concentrates more on teaching the authentic Filipino martial arts that he has learnt from various Grand Masters over the years, teaching his regular club, the Rapid Arnis International Instructors and seminars around the world.
Master O'Malley is also a member of the oldest Eskrima club in the Philippines (Doce Pares) and has trained with many top instructors and Grand Masters from the Philippines and around the world. The list of instructors that he has trained with or have influenced him and played an important role in the development of Rapid Arnis as a whole are recognised world wide as being amongst the best there is in the FMA. These Masters include: Grand Master Dionisio Canete (whom Pat feels is his main influence) of Doce Pares 'Multi Style' Eskrima, GM Momoy and Kano Canete of San Miguel Eskrima, GM Albert Sales of Serra Todo Arnis, Master Jo Borces of Eskrido, GM Nick Elizar of Nickelstick Balintawak Eskrima, Grand Master Ondo Caburnay of Lapunti Arnis De Abanico, Grand Master Remy Presas of Modern Arnis, Grand Master Borin Heyrosa of Balintawak Eskrima, Grand Master Navales of NAKEG, Master Dan Nalasco of Doce Pares Original, Master Loloy Bonifacio of the B.D.U. system, GM Intin Carin Sr of Vicar Self defence, GM Alafredo and Intin Carin Jr of Carins Doce Pares, Master Bill McGrath of Pekiti Tirsia Kali, Suro Mike Inay of Inayan Serrada Eskrima, and of course his first instructor Master Bob Breen of Jeet Kune Do / Kali fame to name but a few.
Master O'Malley also has many years of experience in several other arts such as JKD / Kali, Muay Thai, English Boxing, Kenpo Niten Ryu, Wrestling and Judo to name but a few but as Master O'Malley has stated on many occasions 'all of the other arts I have studied have helped me understand and appreciate just how well rounded and effective the Filipino martial arts really are'. 'I enjoy training in other arts, but if I am honest I feel the most effective system for me is the art of Arnis / Eskrima which has helped me improve and modify the other arts I had the opportunity to train in'.
From 2002 Master O'Malley decided to take a back seat, this was in order to look after and spend more time with his family but because of his reputation and the high demand of his instruction coupled with some individuals making false claims regarding his beloved art, Master O'Malley has once again decided to take on the role of educating the public about what the real Filipino martial arts is all about.
Rapid Arnis is a name that everyone recognises in the FMA, so much so that some new groups that have recently formed are claiming to have either been born from the ashes of Rapid Arnis or be from Rapid Arnis in some shape or form claiming that Rapid Arnis no longer exists. The truth of the matter is that Master Pat O'Malley and Rapid Arnis is very much alive and thriving as it has always been since it's formation in 1993 and many still consider Rapid Arnis International to be leading the way in the teaching and promotion of the authentic Filipino martial arts in Europe today. In a way as Master O'Malley states 'we are proud that others see it necessary to use our name in order to promote themselves, this in it's self say's a lot as to how highly regarded Rapid Arnis is' Master O'Malley also stated after seeing some of the false claims: 'Some groups claim to have been born from the ashes of Rapid Arnis. But as they can see and much to their disappointment we a re still here and better than ever before. They may make claims to be from us, or like us, but I know all too well, there is only one Rapid Arnis and it is here to stay. I say join us, and find out why we lead the way'.
Master O'Malley now feels that Rapid Arnis International is now destined for better things now that he has formed an alliance / partnership with the oldest Eskrima club in the world (Doce Pares) and feels that it will not only benefit him in his further education of the authentic Filipino martial arts but will also benefit his students who will have a far better chance to see the people that not only influenced Rapid Arnis as a whole but also they get the opportunity to actually train with Master O'Malley's instructors.
As Master O'Malley states 'There comes a time when all martial arts are regarded as main stream, and the Filipino martial arts is now at this time, the problem with that is that all of a sudden every man and his dog is now claiming to be an authority in the Filipino martial arts simply because it is considered to be popular in the publics eye, they are trying to push aside those who have spent years popularising the art as a whole in order to give the public the impression that they are the ones who are really in the know. Our job as instructors of the art is not only to educate the public as to what is real and what is not, but also to protect it from those who would use it purely to make a quick buck. We at the end of the day are the guardians of the art and our job is to make sure it does not fall in to the wrong hands. What better way to do this than to join forces with the oldest and most respected club in the World, Doce Pares 'Multi Style' Eskrima System and the San Miguel Eskrima style'.
It is because of his years of hard and continuous study, promotion and support for the authentic Filipino martial arts that Master O'Malley has over the years built a reputation that has earned the respect of the Masters in the Philippines and on a world wide scale, very few people can make this claim, and fewer even live up to the standards expected of them.
But Master O'Malley although generous in his approach to life and teaching he is only selfish with one thing, the teaching of authentic Filipino martial arts regardless of style. It is for this reason he was the first European to be inducted in to the Philippine Council of Kali Eskrima Arnis Masters and is now the official UK Representative for the Council as well as being the main driving force and Official Spokesman for the British Council of Kali Eskrima Arnis Instructors, in December 2006 he was also appointed Sports & Cultural Affairs Representative: World Council of Peoples for the United Nations for the Special Emissary in the Asia office which has it's offices in Manila, Philippines, and this position is now registered at the United Nations Head Quarters in New York ,USA. Such is his dedication to the Filipino martial arts.
